The Third Annual Dragon Boat Festival hosted by The Dragon Flies is taking place on Saturday, June 23, 2007! (2008 dates not posted yet)
The spacious grounds of Palmer Park in Port Perry will become a hub of activity when hundreds of people visit this picturesque town just 45 minutes east of Toronto, Ontario. Some will be spectators, some will be volunteers and others will be team members doing their part to raise funds for Breast Cancer diagnosis and treatment.
A majority of proceeds will be donated to the four (4) local hospitals: Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Lakeridge Health Port Perry, Uxbridge Cottage Hospital and the Durham Region Cancer Centre.
Races cover 500m with three boats in each heat. The course will span the water from the west side of Scugog Island over to Palmer Park.
Forty teams, including breast cancer survivor and youth teams, will take part in this year's festival. Team divisions include Youth Crew (ages 14-17), Mixed Crew, All Women Crew and Breast Cancer Survivor Crew. Complete teams are comprised of 22 people (20 paddlers, 1 drummer and 1 steerperson). All equipment is supplied and training is provided by professional dragonboaters prior to race day. Those taking part must be at least 14 years of age and must attend two of three on-water practices prior to the festival. On-water practices generally take place weekday evenings, 7-10 days before festival day. Safety and fun go hand-in-hand at our festival!

Sisters at Heart Celebration |

It’s a Pink Paddle Party!
The Sisters at Heart Celebration
Burlington, Vermont
Saturday August 3, 2008
ridethedragon.org
Dragonheart Vermont has created the Sisters at Heart Celebration just for breast cancer survivor dragon boaters. It’s a weekend packed with paddling fun and camaraderie for 15 bcs teams from the US and Canada. It is set for August 2-3, 2008. Where most dragon boating events are all about racing and who comes over the finish line first, our Sisters at Heart Celebration is all about the celebration of our sisterhood. We address issues that are specific to breast cancer survivors who have chosen to try dragon boating as part of their recovery process.
We will hold a Power Up Paddling Workshop put on by the experienced and delightful crew of Montreal’s 22Dragons. As a way for paddlers to pick up some new paddling tips and enjoy the change of coaching perspective. Our second workshop, our In the Pink Stretch Workshop, focuses is on teaching stretches especially for breast cancer survivors who have arm and body issues as a result of treatment. It will pinpoint stretches that are most helpful for the sport of dragon boating. The third session is our Sisters Sing-along Workshop. An a capella group called The Meter Maids will entertain and engage participants in song. We have a yummy lunch cruise planned on board the Spirit of Ethan Allen. The highlight of the day is our Sisters Friendship Races. Teams do not race with their usual team. We mix up all of the paddlers and race together to promote camaraderie.
On Sunday, the breast cancer survivor teams will be the honored guests at our Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival. This festival boasts a field of 75 community teams and loads of enthusiasm. The breast cancer survivor teams will race in their own division in our community festival. They will kick off the races early at 7:30am (7am marshalling). The Sisters at Heart Challenge Cup and Flower Ceremony will be held around noon. It is one of the highlights of the day for all of the 25,000 spectators. After the race, we hold an award presentation for the Challenge Cup as well as special spirit awards. The cost for the weekend is just $80 USD per person—for two events in one weekend! You can’t beat it! Register now, as space is limited.
“We are sisters at heart joined in the race to end breast cancer
. . . at last.”
